A Shapeless Caprice (Portrait of a musician - Linda Fredriksson)

A Shapeless Caprice is a piece that never settles into a fixed form, defying linearity and constantly rearranging itself anew. Comprised of a total of eight improvised takes of varying lengths, four on each channel, randomly played and with a total running time of about two and a half hours, the chances to see and hear the same piece twice are slim to none.

In an attempt to create a portrait that relishes fluidity, movement and change, beyond it’s playback mechanism, A Shapeless Caprice was shot with cameras attached to the body and the saxophone, thus rendering them intimate and fully contingent to the movement and presence of the performer in the space.

It felt important to also further unsettle certain spectatorial binary relationships through it’s mode of presentation, thus tipping the screens to the floor to allow movement around them and hopefully ridding the experience also of fixed orientations, such as left, right, up or down.
